› Children Nagara sabai calls for a legal recognition to participation of children in local governance

Zone 1 of Chennai Corporation, Tiruvottiyur Municipality and Kathivakkam Municipality witnessed a milestone in the process of child participation on the 20th anniversary of the proclamation of Child rights by United Nations. Confederation of Arunodhaya Children Sangams (CACS) organized Children Nagara Sabai on 21st November 2009 at the following places

Kathivakkam Municipality
Thiruvottiyur Municipality

The Chairman, Mr. Dunlop Ravi and five councilars of zone 1, four councilors of Tiruvottiyur Municipality, Chairman Mr. Tirisangu and nine councilors from Kathivakkam Municipality participated in the Children nagara sabai.

In each area the programme started with a rally which went through the different parts of the community to raise awareness and to gain support for Children Nagar saba.

The Children Nagara Saba was facilitated by the respective Zonal committee members. Children presented on the need for Children nagara sabai, initiatives taken by CACS,the problems of children specific to particular zones and the demands of children. The programme included cultural expression by children spelling out their problems and their demands. The Children Nagara sabai ended with adopting the following resolutions

Resolutions

  • Government should give legal recognition to Children Nagara Sabai
  • Children Nagar sabai should be convened four times in a year

15th August Independence Day
14th November Children's Day

           If the day falls on a working day the following Saturday or Sunday can be fixed

  • Ward level councils should be formed. All children (8-18 yrs) residing in the ward will be members of the ward council
  • From the ward level 10 children (12-18 yrs) will be elected in a democratic way to be members of the Nagara sabai at zonal/municipal level. 50% representation should be given to girls
  • An executive committee comprising of 10 members will be elected in a democratic way from the Nagara sabai. ( 50% reservation to girls)
  • Children Nagara Sabai should be conducted by the executive committee
  • Executive committee of Children Nagara sabai should be given an opportunity to participate in the zonal and municipal meetings.
  • The resolutions passed by the Children Nagara sabai should be communicated to the zonal and municipal councils

Note: In the elections 50 % reservation for girls and representation to differently abled, Dalits, tribals, fishing community and minorities should be ensured.

The Chairman of Zone 1 of Chennai Corporation, Mr. Dunlop Ravi said that he would support the cause of children for the Children Nagara sabai and would forward their request to the Mayor of Corporation of Chennai by getting an appointment for the children. Mr. Kribakaran, Councilor, Ward 11 recommended that the children make the presentation to the Chief Minister of the State.

The Chairman of Kathivakkam Municipality Mr. Tirisangu assured the children that he would discuss the issue of Children Nagara saba in the meeting of Tiruvottiyur Municipality and with the support of the other members pass a resolution in support of formation of Children Nagara Sabai. › Children's Day Celebration, 14th November 2009

This programme was held on 14th November 2009 betweem 4.00 pm - 7.00 pm at TKP Mahal,Thiruvottiyur. Children from all ECC, CLC centres participated in the function with much delight. The tender heart rendered fantastic cultural activities, Children and parents shared their experience and formation of knowledge and skills in them.

The programme was entirely very good, well organized with much effor. Mrs. Virgil D'Sami Executive Director gave an introductory address of the day felicitating the children Mrs.Sandhiya, Mrs.Narmadadevi from ICCW felicitated the children Mrs. Vanitha Kargil nagar school headmistress  praised the performance of children and felicitated them.

 

› Adolescent Awareness and Counseling and Empowerment Convention  2009

Adolescent Awareness and Counseling and Empowerment project was started at Arunodhaya in the year 2007 aiming at adolescents and  their problems has made a very good impact on them and their parents in raising awareness on the issues and how to handle them.

To encourage and lead their participation in the project we used to convene annual Conventions with separate theme for each year .This year the annual convention had the theme “Ensuring Safe and Protective Environment to Adolescents and held on 7-09-2009 at T.K.P.Mahal ,Thiruvottiyur ,Chennai -19.

More than 600 participants participated in the Convention and showed their talents in cultural and creative activities. At the onset of the function adolescent lighted the candles to show as a mark of ensuring their safe and protective environment.  The scenes attracted the onlookers of the program of the day.

 

› National Children Science Convention 2009

Arunodhaya Children Sangam from six zones participated in the recently held North Chennai Districts science conventiom program organized by Tamilnadu Science Forum at Thyagaraja College in Washermenpet on November 1st 2009 .The District President of TNSF Mr.Semmal ,Prof .Jaganathan Bose Department of Biology Thyagaraja College Mr.Ellango Kerala water supply and drainage, Mr.Balu Thandapani Retd.(DRO),Mr.Ravichandran Environmentalist and Mr.Udhayam South Chennai President TNSF participated in the convention.

More than 200 children from 25 students groups submitted their research report on “Our Planet Earth” among them our Korukkupet area children sangam students were selected to participate in the state level convention to be held on November 28th and 29th 2009 and Prizes were given for our children sangam Members.
